CAMSA ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2013
1. Annual Gala and Fundraiser
The Annual Gala and Fundraiser event was held on May 18, 2013 at Antun’s in Queens Village, New York. It was a very successful event with more than 75 people in attendance who heard an update on the Affordable Care Act from U.S. Congressman Gregory Meeks and her vision for CAMSA from President Deborah Brathwaite, MD. A touch of culture was provided by Author Angela Lynch-Clare, daughter of noted Barbadian politician and founder of the Modern High School, Louis Lynch, who read from her first book, White Chocolate. In addition, four outstanding individuals were honored for their work advancing healthcare for people in the Caribbean Diaspora: Yvonne Graham, Deputy Commissioner, New York State Dept. of Health, Presidential Award for outstanding public health service to the people of New York; Joseph Radix, DDS, Medical and Community Award for professional excellence and community service, and Young Barbadian Professional Society, Community Award for using cultural awareness, mentorship and community outreach to enhance our lives. A Special Presidential Award was presented to Ed Alleyne. The 2013 CAMSA scholarship winners were Alianne Brathwaite, Emma Donahue and Cassandre Louis. Almost $3,000 was raised for CAMSA programs and scholarships.

2.Meeting with New York Caricom Consulates
CAMSA was invited to the Caricom Consuls General meeting on May 29, 2013. CAMSA’s representatives, Dr. Vincent Hutchinson (Vice President) and Mr. Tony Best (Board of Directors), gave a presentation highlighting the association’s history, mission, goals and initiatives. The CG’s showed much interest in CAMSA’s mission and expressed a willingness to work with CAMSA to improve communication with their offices and expand our services to all Caribbean peoples both in the USA and at home.

CAMSA pledged to:
• Support their governments’ health promotion activities (including program  planning, community events, missions, etc.) by providing health experts when  needed
• Establish and provide a database of  competent health experts of both Caribbean, and  non-Caribbean, descent
• In collaboration with our partners, work closely with the consulates to facilitate our missions to deserving nations in the Caribbean basin
• Provide the consulates with updated schedules of CAMSA’s activities, including health symposia, fundraising events and  media programs
• To offer assistance to any Caribbean nation with a deserving health need. In this program, CAMSA will adopt and support a health facility in the Caribbean by providing medical and other healthcare-related supplies to ensure quality health care for its patients. The Annual Health Assistance Award will be granted on the basis of the nation’s need and the substantive impact on its population.   Each consulate was invited to submit a letter stating its nation’s need and briefly explain why their institution should get this award. CAMSA’s Board of Directors will select the winner of the award.
• Co-sponsor the Caricom Health Fair in August 2013

3.Annual Health Assistance Award
The Government of St. Lucia was awarded the First Annual Health Assistance Award which will be presented at the Annual Gala and Fundraiser in 2014. The award will assist in obtaining much needed medical supplies for the St. Jude Hospital, which primarily services the rural south of St. Lucia, and which was recently damaged by fire. The Consul General also inquired about the possibility of CAMSA assisting in the development of a medical-professional volunteer program.

4.Health Fairs

CARICOM Health Fair
CAMSA collaborated with New York CARICOM Consulates and the Caribbean Nurses Association (CANA) to host the Caricom Health Fair at the Holy Cross Parish School in Flatbush, Brooklyn on August 24, 2013. This FREE health extravaganza brought together a very experienced group of health professionals (including physicians and nurses) to screen and educate the community, distribute valuable resource information, conduct clinics, engage in fitness demonstrations, provide family entertainment and giveaways and much more.  Both the President of CANA, Claudette Powell and the President of CAMSA Inc., Dr. Deborah Brathwaite commended the CARICOM Consulates for their vision to collaborate with healthcare organizations (most with Caribbean connections) to make this event possible and for bringing such well-needed services to the Caribbean American community. Congresswoman Yvette Clark addressed the audience and commended the consulates, CAMSA and CANA for organizing the fair. Also participating in the fair from CAMSA was: Ed Alleyne, Vincent Hutchinson, O’Neall Parris, Janelle Taylor and Noel Riley. Others partner participants: Jean Hamilton and Nicki Martin (Caribbean American Outreach Association (CAOA).

Other Health Fairs:
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Health Fair on August 31, 2013 in Jamaica, NY, at which blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, BMI assessment, nutrition counseling and instruction in CPR were provided. CAMSA participating members included Ed Alleyne, Deborah Brathwaite and Janice Cadogan. Other partner participants were Pat Waite and Joan Cumberbatch from the Barbados Nurses Association of America, who provided the CPR instruction, and Jean Hamilton from Caribbean American Outreach Association (CAOA).
Barbados Nurses Association of America (BNAA) Community Health Fair on September 18 at the Jesus the Good Shepherd United Reformed Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. Ed Alleyne and O’Neall Parris represented CAMSA and conducted blood pressure and blood sugar screenings as well as healthcare counseling.

CAMSA collaborated with the Barbados Cancer Association USA (BACA), Inc. to sponsor a Cancer Symposium on September 14, 2013. More than 40 participants heard Dr. Vikash Chatrani, gynecologic oncologist and faculty member of the University of the West Indies (Barbados) and Clinical Director of the Barbados Cancer Society discuss the prevalence, treatment options and challenges Barbados and other West Indian islands face. Dr. Camille Ragin, Associate Professor of Cancer Prevention and Control at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia reviewed epidemiological statistics on cancers and strongly urged attendees too advocate for themselves and thoroughly question their healthcare providers in order to receive the most appropriate treatment. Several cancer patients and relatives also provided details of their challenges in accessing cancer care. The symposium was held at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn.

7.Scholarship Program
CAMSA continues to provide scholarships to assist students with tuition and other educational expenses. Three scholarship awards of $500 each were given in 2013. The scholarship, which is based on academic excellence, is open to individuals of Caribbean heritage living in the USA and pursuing post-secondary education in one of the sciences. The scholarship program was launched in 2009 and is for undergraduate study at a two- or four-year accredited college or university. To date, twelve (12) students have received scholarships.
