Haiti News

The Felix Matthieu clinic in Rouck near Anse-a-Veau officially opened on November 1. The clinic is some 96 kilometers west of Port-au-Prince. It has been made available for CAMSA’s medical team by Frantz Robert “Bob” Monde, former congressman of Nippes, one of Haiti’s administrative departments. CAMSA has treated patients at the clinic during the past 6 months on three separate occasions: March, May, and August. As of our last visit in August, CAMSA members and volunteers have seen more than 600 patients for acute and chronic problems including but limited to post-traumatic stress disorder related to the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

CAMSA’s efforts in Haiti have been spearheaded by Haitian-born Podiatrist, Dr. Patricia Nicholas of Wading River, New York. Her fifth visit to the clinic occurred in August where she spent time treating patients, structuring the pharmacy and looking after general administrative matters. Dr. Nicholas, other CAMSA members and volunteers return to Haiti in November for another medical mission to the clinic.

Initially, patients will be seen three times a week and the clinic will be staffed by six locals. Dr. Fritz-Gerald Larionne, a Haitian physician, acting as the local Medical Director will be assisted by a pharmacy technician, a receptionist, a medical assistant, a maintenance worker, a security guard and a cleaning person. This will not only contribute to the health of the community, but to the local economy. CAMSA or CAMSA sponsored physicians will rotate down on an ongoing basis.
